Why Ages 12–14 Are the Perfect Time to Start Strength Training
There’s a window around 7th to 9th grade where young athletes can make incredible progress with strength training. Their nervous system is highly adaptable, their coordination develops quickly, and even one or two sessions a week can lead to massive improvements within months.
At these ages, neural adaptations happen first. Better balance, better body awareness, and better control. Strength climbs fast because their system learns how to activate more muscle. That foundation sets them up for even more gains as they mature.
They don’t need advanced programming. They just need the basics done well: squats, split squats, hinges, pushes, pulls, simple plyometrics, and medball throws. Add consistency, and they become dramatically stronger and more capable by the time they reach high school.
ReadyCoach follows the same principles coaches use to build young athletes safely and effectively: balanced patterns, smart progressions, and repeatable training.
